At the gates of today’s review we see MX vs ATV Legends, a franchise that has been missing for a few years and is now back on the shelves. The developers of Rainbow Studios and the publisher THQ Nordic they offer us this welcome return on all consoles, aiming above all at those of the ninth generation. In fact, the game is out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. engine cleaned, which has not been used for years. But let’s go into detail, and let’s get into the fray in this MX vs ATV Legends review.
It is not flying, but falling in style
As you can imagine, MX vs ATV Legends is all about vehicle management. Obviously, each will have a different movement system due to the weight and the presence of the two or four wheels. Despite this, it is a lot of fun to learn to understand the limits and characteristics of the various racing cars pad in hand: the classics ATV and MXwhich over the years have accompanied us between hours of fun, and the UTV. The latter are the ones that could give you more trouble, but to start the developers have seen fit to start everyone with motocross, so as to learn more easily to manage the weight of the character on the bike and, above all, to jump well.
It is not a case that Rainbow Studios has decided to focus on the mechanics of the jump as the very first tutorial. This is because it is the simplest method to better understand how to manage both the vehicle and the new physics system implemented to make everything much more pleasant and realistic. We start from motocross also because in this way we have many chances to make mistakes, and it is much easier to learn with a therapy … literally “shock”.
One of the factors that makes MX vs ATV Legends so much fun to play is risk. Yes, because depending on the moment in which you decide to jump, you will take the risk of falling off the bike or not to land in the exact spot and lose control of the vehicle. Above all because often the circuits are full of sharp corners that will make it really difficult not to waste time and – consequently – positions. Despite this, the game’s artificial intelligence is not the best: it is not punitive, nor is it realisticit almost seems that the other riders are there only to “annoy” and make a presence on the track.
Most of your time in MX vs ATV Legends will be spent in the Career modewhich will give you access step by step to all three vehicles available within the game. A gradual thing due, since in any case the more you go forward, the greater the difficulties in managing the racing cars, especially as regards those with four wheels, which pads in the hand seem decidedly heavy and almost unbalances everything that was known before.
This mode it is very useful for slow learning, above all because you take your time, as it is divided into weeks, and it is also possible to train, so that it is easier to manage the race. Still speaking of this mode, know that there is no type of story present, but you will simply be thrown into the fray to become number one in every single discipline, showing everyone that you know how to manage every single motorized vehicle in the game.
Unfortunately, however, learning is not that simple, because although there is a “rewind” to avoid repeating the same mistake, it is not really well implemented. Yes, because you will not be allowed to choose the moment, you will simply respawn at a certain point in the past, which is a lot confusing. Furthermore, another detail that does not improve the situation it’s about vehicle upgrades: there are, but you have no idea which ones will have to be upright, letting it be assumed that the new ones are “necessarily” better than the previous ones and more performing. In short, the developers have really focused a lot on physics and on making it fun to be in the saddle, but it seems that we forgot to smooth out everything else.
Dizziness
Excluding the gameplay of MX vs ATV Legends for a moment from this review paragraph, let’s focus on what is the technical sector of the game. Let’s start by saying right away that, regardless of the efforts of the developers, it’s not a very good title to look at, especially if we take other similar releases into consideration. Of course, on its side it has a free roaming part that allows you to go to various points on a map, but it is certainly not an open world gamewhere inevitably the graphics see “worsening”.
The music, but above all the sound effects, are the most appropriate thing in the game: especially when you play using headphones, hearing the roar of the various engines really manages to bring out the desire to run on dirt and mud. One thing implemented really good is the way vibrates the controller when the wheels fall on the track, as if you fall with the wheels in front then it will vibrate in front and vice versa.
If you are particularly passionate about the genre and are willing to turn a blind eye then this could be for you. Otherwise we can not help but recommend a title extremely dedicated to motocross, such as Monster Energy Supercross: The Official Videogame 5. Unfortunately this title fails to reach a full sufficiency due to the numerous defects.

MX vs ATV Legends (Tested on XBX / S)
5.8Total Score
MX vs ATV Legends is a title that unfortunately does not hit the target, despite the efforts of the developers, who have implemented a new physical system to make everything much more realistic. Unfortunately, the thing that affects our evaluation the most is the gameplay which remains decidedly not very fun, including the career mode, and with a graphics sector that does not reach the next-gen, not even touching it. Such a pity.
