SPACE: ELON MUSK, ‘IN 2 YEARS WE’LL GO TO MARS, IN 20 YEARS WE’LL LIVE THERE’
In two years we’re going to Mars. Elon Musk announces SpaceX’s plan to ‘colonize’ the red planet. The magnate, boss of X and Tesla, has outlined the ambitious project for the future from his social media. “The first ‘Mars Spaceships’ will launch in 2 years, when the next Earth-Mars window opens. There will be no crew on board and they will be used to test the reliability of a safe arrival on Mars.“, he says pointing to the first step.
“If the landing goes well, the first manned trips to Mars will be made in 4 years. From there, the number of flights will grow exponentially with the aim of building cities capable of sustaining themselves in about 20 years”, adds Musk, who sets as his ultimate goal that of “becoming multiplanetary” and allowing the human race to “no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically (he writes verbatim, ed.), on a single planet”.
The project is ambitious to say the least, and according to Musk, it will be economically viable. “Space X has created a first stage of a fully reusable rocket, and more importantly, it has made reuse economically viable. Making multiplanetary life on Mars is fundamentally a cost issue,” he adds. “Currently, it costs about a billion dollars to “get a ton of payload to the surface of Mars. You have to improve that to $100,000 per ton to build a self-sustaining city there, so the technology has to be 10,000 times better. Extremely difficult, but not impossible,” he says.
