American conductor Ryan Bancroft has been appointed chief conductor of the Stockholm Philharmonic from the concert period 2023-24. Bancroft (b. 1989) grew up in Los Angeles and studied trumpet at the California Institute of the Arts before pursuing a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland.
In 2018, Bancroft won the Malko Conducting Competition in Copenhagen. In the autumn of 2020, he began as chief conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and in the concert season 2021–22, he will also be the guitarist partner of the Tapiola Sinfonietta. Marzi Nymanin alongside.
Stockholm In the Philharmonic, Bancroft follows the Finn Sakari Oramoa, who served as chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Stockholm Philharmonic for 13 years from 2008 to 2021. After ending his term in the spring of 2021, Oramo was appointed honorary conductor of the orchestra.
