Almeloër Kenzo K., suspected of a double murder, is conscious. The detectives want to try to question him for the first time next week. K. was shot by the police on his balcony. He is still staying in the MST hospital in Enschede.
28-year-old K. is suspected of having caused a massacre in his flat on Steynstraat in Almelo on Friday, September 17. He would have killed his neighbor downstairs and also her niece who was visiting. A nurse who cared for the woman was able to escape via the balcony on the second floor.
K. withdrew to his apartment after the crime and showed himself a little later on the balcony with a crossbow. With that weapon he had threatened the nurse and fired at the police. The Special Interventions Service then eliminated him with a bullet in the chest.
The suspect was in a coma for three weeks, but has since regained consciousness. The police have been able to tell him what he is suspected of. K. is guarded by the police in the hospital. It is not known how he reacted to this.
K. would have recognized his lawyer from an earlier moment in late August, early September. The suspect was then arrested for a property crime, but the Public Prosecution Service decided to let him go.
While he was in a coma, the court extended K.’s detention for another 90 days. The question is how long K. can sustain an interrogation and whether he can make a statement.
