The students, from different countries in Europe and other continents, will study at the UMU
The University of Murcia (UMU) held this Tuesday afternoon the official welcome ceremony for foreign students (erasmus) who will study at the institution this year as part of the different mobility programs managed by the International Relations Area.
In this first quarter, 700 students arrived in Murcia, to which will be added around another 300 who will arrive in January. In total, a thousand people will live and study in the city of Murcia during the course, according to UMU sources in a statement.
To these figures we must add the more than 950 UMU students who will carry out stays in foreign universities throughout the course. Pascual Cantos, vice-rector for Internationalization at the University of Murcia, and Antonio Benito Galindo, delegate councilor for Education, Urban Agenda and Open Government of the Murcia City Council, participated in the event.
This event also serves as the start of the Bienvenida Internacional #WelcomeDays program of activities, thanks to which newly arrived students will get to know the city of Murcia, its cultural offer; as well as other localities of the Region.
Most of the students received by the UMU belong to the Erasmus+ Studies program, with a reception of 572 foreigners in our classrooms in this first quarter, a figure that will be increased with the arrival of 200 students in the month of January. On behalf of the UMU, 817 students will study at the more than 500 European partner universities.
To these data we must add the flows of activity with Latin America, which occur mainly under the ILA Exchange program with Latin America, in which 67 students from the Region will participate. For this same program and for the first semester, the UMU will receive 77 students from Latin America. Likewise, through agreements with the Carolina Foundation, four master’s students and two doctoral students will arrive.
The collaboration with the International Postgraduate University Association AUIP will allow four Ibero-American professors to continue their doctoral studies at the UMU for the fourth consecutive year. Finally, the University of Murcia will receive a student from Colombia who will carry out master’s studies thanks to the MAEC-AECID scholarships.
Mobility with the United States materializes mainly through the ISEP Program, with 14 outgoing students and 24 arrivals, in addition to 11 sent students and 8 received students through the bilateral agreement program with American universities such as Oregon State University, Kent State University, Southern Utah University, Simpson College.
Within this same program, thanks to agreements with Asian countries, three students from Taiwan will come to the UMU through the agreement with Tamkang University; while a student from the Region will take the course there. In turn, this academic year the first mobilities were carried out with Korea, where there are currently two UMU students. On the other hand, two more are carrying out virtual mobility at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.
The Erasmus+ International Mobility Program allows this course the reception of twelve students from different countries outside the EU, such as Burkina Faso, Egypt, Georgia, Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, Thailand and Ukraine. With this same program, three UMU students will carry out their studies in Brazil, Mexico and Egypt.
On the other hand, under the Erasmus+ Internship Program in this first quarter, 33 students will leave, and it is expected that up to a hundred UMU students will travel throughout the course to carry out stays in European companies and universities. Within the framework of other curricular internship agreements, the Faculty of Education will offer ten internship places in Argentina and France.
