Promote correct interaction between hospital and local medicine and lighten the burden of the disease for patients and caregivers: these are just some of the objectives of ‘MS Kare’, a new support program for people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which allows you to live your own therapeutic path with greater safety and serenity. This is reported by an article published in ‘Allies for Health’ (www.alleatiperlasalute.it), portal dedicated to medical-scientific information created by Novartis.

Every year in Italy, according to data from the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (Aism), 3,600 people are affected by the disease, with a new diagnosis every 3 hours. Of the 130,000 sick people, 5-10% get sick in childhood and 50% before the age of 40. Multiple sclerosis is the leading cause of neurological disability in young adults, after trauma. And precisely the chronicity of the pathology of the central nervous system, unpredictable and often disabling, requires a new approach from the point of view of taking charge of patients.

The MS Kare project, promoted by Novartis – the article explains – was therefore born with the aim of improve the patient’s overall management in all phases of his treatment pathfrom carrying out blood chemistry screening tests at home, with online reporting available to doctor and patient, to the coaching process with a nurse dedicated to supporting the patient, as well as throughout the therapeutic process, through services that accompany the patient and provide him solutions aimed at facilitating it, such as home delivery of the drug and a dedicated call center to answer any questions.

“Multiple sclerosis radically changes the lives of patients – says Mario Alberto Battaglia, president of the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (Fism) and general director of Aism – In addition to the diagnosis and the inevitable path of chronic and degenerative disease, further difficulties of a psychological and relational nature are added and work. Every life context and project must deal with the presence of the disease and its management, impacting the quality of life of the person, but also that of family members and caregivers. This is why it is essential that taking charge of the person with multiple sclerosis is above all centered on the person and his needs. In this desirable paradigm shift, the domiciliation of care, assistance, training and consultation therefore plays a crucial role”.

“For Novartis, reimagining medicine means not only making available innovative and effective therapeutic options capable of changing the history of the disease, but also offering solutions that can respond in a concrete way to the unmet needs of patients and healthcare professionals, contributing to an ever more efficient and sustainable – declares Paola Coco, Chief Scientific Officer and Medical Affairs Head of Novartis Italia – This patient support project is part of a wider process that, as a company, we have already started in line with the guidelines of the Pnrr which stimulates the territoriality of care”.
