MPs get more money – that’s how much Scholz earns

From July 1st, members of the Bundestag can look forward to an increase in their diet. This also increases the salaries of Chancellor Scholz and the federal government.

Berlin – Salary increase in the Bundestag. Members of the German Bundestag can look forward to a significant increase in their diets from July 1st. Then the people’s representatives get a good 300 euros more per month. The diet increase was announced at the end of April in a letter from Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD).

On July 1st, the so-called parliamentary allowance will increase from EUR 10,012.89 to EUR 10,323.29 gross per month. This corresponds to an increase of 310.40 euros or 3.1 percent. In addition, every member of parliament receives a monthly expense allowance as part of the so-called office equipment. This must cover all expenses that the Member of Parliament has to incur in order to exercise his office. This includes setting up a constituency office or a second home in Berlin. The tax-free flat rate is currently 4,583.39 euros. Combined, the MPs receive 14,906.68 euros per month.

Bundestag: Members’ diets are rising again – Chancellor Scholz is also benefiting

As in the previous legislative period, the MPs’ remuneration is adjusted annually on July 1 to the development of the nominal wage index, which is determined by the Federal Statistical Office. The Bundestag had confirmed this procedure shortly before Christmas 2021. Since the corona pandemic had led to a significant drop in earnings among employees, salaries had fallen in the past year. In 2022, the organizers can now look forward to a plus again.

The members of the federal government who, in addition to their office, also have a mandate in the Bundestag will also benefit from the increase. One of them is Chancellor Olaf Scholz. After the 2021 federal election, the 64-year-old entered the German parliament as a direct candidate for the constituency of Potsdam – Potsdam-Mittelmark II – Teltow-Fläming II.

Scholz, Habeck and Co.: That’s how much the federal government earns per month

As bild.de with reference to the response to a government inquiry by the AfD, the chancellor’s gross salary has risen to EUR 30,139.81 per month as a result of the latest increases. As of July 1, the 64-year-old will be the first Chancellor to earn more than EUR 30,000 gross per month. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens), Finance Minister Christian Linder (FDP) and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) can also look forward to a salary increase due to their mandate.

However, some members of the government are left empty-handed when it comes to the increase in diets. The simple reason: they have no mandate in the German Bundestag. Among them is Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD), who, according to reports, continues to receive 20,425.57 euros a month. In addition to Lambrecht, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) and Head of the Federal Chancellery Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD) do not have a mandate and remain unaffected by the increase in salaries.
