Movies Finns have an unprecedented assault on one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals – “Admission to Sundance is a stamp of acceptance”

The top US festival has not previously qualified long Finnish fiction films.

“Access to Sundance is a stamp of approval. The stories of teenage girls have not traditionally been at the heart of cinematography, ”says Haapasalo.

The film tells the story of three Finnish girls aged 17–18.

“The story is fragments of life between childhood and adulthood.”

Evil graves is presented in a Midnight performance series that focuses on horror and fantasy. The protagonist is a 12-year-old girl trying to live up to the demands of her demanding mother. Secret and violent wishes come true when a girl finds a strange bird egg.

Supervisor Bergholm clarifies that this is not a psychological thriller where events would turn out to be just a bad dream.

Evil graves not just for horror fans, but for the wider art house audience, ”says Bergholm.

“I’ve been scared of horror movies and avoided watching them. Evil graves is a film I would have wanted to see regardless of the genre limit. ”

Finnish-led resulting from multinational production With bad graves already had a high profile in its infancy. With a budget of almost four million euros, it is the most expensive Finnish female director’s film.

Due to the pandemic, among other things, the premiere has been postponed, and at least once, its access to a major film event was canceled at the very last minute. So the premiere now is a victory and a relief.

Many due to the cancellations of festivals and the increase in supply caused by the pandemic, the films have finally missed an opening that once seemed certain.

Speaking of the importance of Sundance, Bergholm first mentions the benefit of spreading in the United States. Evil graves has already been sold there as well as in 40 other countries.

“Our U.S. publication is becoming extensive,” Bergholm says.

Haapasalo recalls that access to the series of prestigious festivals raises the international profile of oitis.

“In terms of doing and content, choice means being understood outside your own frame of reference.”

“How do you make a film that is local but works universally? Succeeding in it is not just about the author’s intentions. Everyone wants to make the best film possible. ”

Girls girls girls will premiere in Finland in April. The main parts are presented by Linnea Leino, Morning Milonoff and Eleonoora Kauhanen. In addition to director Haapasalo, the screenwriters will leave Sundance to represent him Daniela Hakulinen and Ilona Ahti as well as the producer Leila Lyytikäinen.

Haapasalo has lived in New York for ten years and studied film there at the Tisch School of the Arts.

“I can’t judge for myself if anything from the New York years is in my handwriting. At least Sundance’s voters didn’t know where I studied,” Haapasalo says.

The bastard the main characters are Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkilä and Jani Volanen. The Finnish premiere of the film is in February. In addition to the director, at least the screenwriter is leaving Sundance Ilja Rautsi and producer Mika Ritalahti.

“There are other festival shows in the world already known right after Sundance,” Bergholm reveals.

In addition to the Haapasalo and Bergholm films, Sundance has a Finnish-produced documentary The Mission. Tania Andersonin the film follows North American Mormon missionaries in Finland.

Sundancen the film festival begins on January 20th. The event will be held in Park City, Utah. The program was released late Thursday in Finnish time.
