Movies|Niko and the riddle of the reindeer is becoming an international hit. The film received an enthusiastic reception at Cannes.
Animated movie Niko and the riddle of the storm reindeer has attracted significant interest at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is a sequel to the popular one Niko– for the film series, the two previous parts of which have been very successful both in Finland and internationally.
The first part of the film series Niko – The pilot’s son (2008) was the most watched Finnish film of all time in 2009: three million viewers in 23 countries.
Niko-films follow the reindeer of the same name, who adventures in winter landscapes with Santa Claus and gets into various exciting situations.
“Already before Cannes, Niko was already sold to more than 80 countries”, he says Hannu Tuomainenproducer-writer of the film series and Niko-the creator of the universe.
Cannes has a festival side and a market side separately. New Niko had time to finish just before the start of the Cannes Film Festival. It has been seen in market side shows a couple of times.
“The reception was unprecedentedly enthusiastic,” says Tuomainen.
How Tuomain would judge Nikon reasons for success?
One of them is Finnishness.
“The basic concept is very national, extremely Finnish. We are very loyal to Lapland, winter and the Finnish Santa Claus. People know how to appreciate the fact that the stories take place in a certain place.”
Tuomainen thinks that this clear Finnishness separates Niko from, for example, films from American studios, where you move in “jungles and Hawaii”. The film deviates from the mainstream in its landscape.
Domineering believes in the attractiveness of the film’s story.
“We wanted to make a film that speaks to the audience.”
Although Niko and the riddle of the storm reindeer looks like a Christmas movie, in reality we are in deeper waters, says Tuomainen.
According to him, the film is a story about a child’s growth. The viewer can be excited about how the character is doing.
Niko and the riddle of the storm reindeer -animation is generally thought to even become an international hit, and it could be the second biggest success story of Finnish films in the world Aki Kaurismäki after the movies.
“After the Cannes Film Festival, we will report quite pleasant and significant news”, confirms Tuomainen.
Movie series the crew has remained the same since the first film.
They have directed the film Kari Juusonen and Jørgen Lerdamand was scripted by Kari Juusonen, Hannu Tuomainen and Martin Thorisson.
The film premieres in Finland on October 11.
