Fabián Cancelarich, former Millonario goalkeepers, Ferro and the Argentine national team, died this Tuesday at the age of 58 after decompensating in the gym of the Caballito club, where he was the goalkeeper coach of the first division squad.
Born in Santa Fe, Argentina on December 30, 1985Cancelarich was a member of the Argentine team that was runner-up in the world at Italia 90, where he arrived as the third goalkeeper behind Nery Pumpido and Sergio Goycochea.
He emerged from the youth ranks of Ferro, where he was trained under the tutelage of a man who left his mark on the institution: Carlos Timoteo Griguol. With his unmistakable blonde hair, he debuted in the first division in 1986 and performed in the Caballito institution until 1992.
From the Ferro Carril Oeste Club we deeply regret the death of Fabián Cancelarich, our goalkeeper coach of the Technical Corps of the Professional Soccer Team, runner-up in the World in Italia ’90 and goalkeeper of our club between 1986 and 1999.

Then he would have another short period, in the 1999/2000 season, after which he decided to retire. He also played for Belgrano de Córdoba, Newell’s, Huracán, Platense and Millionaires in the Colombian league.
He joined the ambassador team in 1995 and played 18 games between Libertadores (5) and the league. He debuted that same year, on April 2 against Nacional in a 4-0 defeat.
Along with his growth as a professional, he joined different youth teams led by Carlos Pachame (he was part of the squad for the Pan American Games in Indianapolis 87 and the Olympic Games in Seoul 88), until his arrival in the majors, under the tutelage of Carlos Salvador Bilardo.
Fabián Cancelarich, who was the Archers Coach at Ferrocarril Oeste, died today at the age of 58. The event occurred in full team practice. In Millonarios (95/96) he played 18 games. After his retirement he dedicated himself to technical direction. He started in Belgrano de Córdoba and continued with several promotion clubs, and then joined other technical teams. For several years he was in Ferro, his former club and of which he is an idol, where he was a goalkeeper coach and collaborator of the team’s driver. first division.
Cancelarich was a good guy. And he even laughed at himself. He was a great archer, but perhaps he should have had better luck. He was called up about 30 times in the senior team, but he was never able to play a game. He has a rich anecdote of curious situations. For example, He was the victim of a record by José Luis Chilavert, who scored three penalty goals in the same game.
Almost five years ago he was honored on the Ferro playing field, and in an interview with the party media Ferro Web he told some stories about his life. “I arrived at Ferro in 1980, in the lower divisions, and in ’82 I was already training with the squad where the historical players who became champions were. And I was lucky to play with almost everyone.. I remember Mario Gómez, Cúper, Marchesini and Garré in defense. I progressed with them in my beginnings and played many games. Then with Oscar Acosta and Fantaguzzi, who “We lived together in a building, on the corner of the club, in Bogotá and García Lorca”he said then.
His participation in the 90 World Cup was also full of random situations. In principle, he was not on the payroll that would travel to Italy, but Luis Islas had a fight with Bilardo.
“I was one of the last to join the Trigoria concentration. The local tournament ended in mid-May and in the press it was said that Angel David Comizzo and I were the third goalkeeper. I remember that I came back from playing on the last date and after a while they called me from the AFA to travel to Italy. The next day I took a plane alone and left. As fate would have it, days later Comizzo also joined. And yes: I thought I had a chance because Goyco came without continuity. But luckily Bilardo chose Goyco. Ha ha ha. It didn’t turn out badly,” he joked in that interview with Clarín.
Another of the atypical situations in which he was an involuntary protagonist occurred on the Vélez field on April 24, 1999. There, wearing the Platense jersey (where Calamar played at home against Boca de Bianchi) he had to suffer a penalty kick by Martin Palermo. The curious thing was that the Titan slipped before reaching the ball and hit with both legs. It was a goal (today it would be annulled), and it was immortalized as the penalty kicked with both feet.
On this day 21 years ago Martín Palermo made one of the most discussed plays in history: the penalty kick with both feet against Platense. Saturday 04/24/1999 for date 9 of the Clausura, 2-0 victory against Calamar, local in Vélez. The controversy reached FIFA. #Mouth pic.twitter.com/7doTK8M8cy
