The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation in Indonesia said that a volcano on the island of Halmahera in the east of the country erupted today, Saturday, releasing a cloud of ash five kilometers high, while the National Disaster Management Agency affiliated with the center warned of the possibility of flash floods and cold lava flows.
The eruption of Mount Ebo at 1103 am (0203 GMT) followed a series of eruptions in May after authorities noticed an increase in volcanic activity beginning in April, which led to the evacuation of seven nearby villages.
The center said, “A column of very dense gray ash shot out toward the southwest,” adding that residents and tourists must maintain a distance of no less than seven kilometers from the crater of the active volcano.
Footage published by the center showed the volcano spewing ash, which became denser and eventually dispersed.
The Disaster Management Agency alerted local authorities to watch for secondary disasters such as flash floods and cold lava flows.
An analysis conducted by the country’s meteorological agency shows that the region has the possibility of moderate to heavy rain, without specifying an expected time for this.
