Employees and visitors of the House of Representatives are complaining about the parking garage under the temporary parliament. It is cramped and charging stations do not work or are occupied by illegal parkers.
Since the House of Representatives moved to the temporary accommodation on Bezuidenhoutseweg in The Hague, complaints have been pouring in about the parking garage under the building. Several motorists have already suffered damage because the corridors and parking spaces are narrow.
Some MPs with large cars still park their cars in the larger Pleingarage on the Binnenhof, and then walk to the temporary Chamber Building – a 15-minute walk. “You can safely call it a horror parking garage,” says One todayjournalist Joost Vullings. A while back, when he was about to leave the garage, he grazed a wall in the bend. With thousands of euros in damage as a result.
No sprinkler system
,,It is a building from the 1980s and you notice that”, says Vullings. ,,The layout is not logical and there are many pillars. I hear from more visitors that they become very restless when they have to park.” Some of the parking spaces have been closed off because the garage does not have a sprinkler system. The fire brigade demands that there is space between the cars, so that any fire cannot easily spread.
Meanwhile, House residents are arguing about the eight spaces in the parking basement for electric cars. The charging stations do not always work. An employee of Equans, the manager of the piles, confirmed last week that some of the piles are experiencing malfunctions.
The other poles are occupied by cars that do not charge their electric cars, complains GroenLinks MP Laura Bromet. She posted a photo on Twitter last week with a row of cars whose plugs are not in the charging station. ,,Eight spots, and none were connected”, said Bromet. “I still have to charge to get home tonight, so it will be slow driving and the heating off.”
‘No rules for charging stations’
CDA MP Henri Bontenbal informed Bromet via Twitter that his car was also occupying a parking space. ,,Yes, that’s my car”, he responded. “This CDA member drives electrically. Stewardship, etc. If you drive electrically more often, you know that the red light means that this charging station is malfunctioning. So I couldn’t load my car.”
It is not prohibited to park an electric car at a charging station without connecting the plug. “There are no rules for the use of the charging stations,” said a spokesman for the House of Representatives.
