2023 will be the year of an unprecedented revolution for the world of MotoGP. The premier class of two-wheelers, in fact, having developed an idea that has already been implemented for some years by Formula 1, has decided to introduce a Sprint race. As happens in the Circus, the ‘additional’ event will take place on Saturday, will be shorter than the classic Grand Prix, and will award world championship points, although fewer than the main race. However, there will be two major differences compared to F1: the fact that the Sprint race will not determine the starting positions in the Sunday event and the decision to have these events take place in every single weekend of next season. In F1, on the other hand, there are only three races on Saturday throughout the year.
Regarding this revolution, exactly as it had happened in the Circus, the opinions of the pilots were very different from each other. Marc Marquez he had given credit to the idea, while the reigning champion was much more skeptical Fabio Quartararowho had defined the entire project “totally stupid“. The F1 world champion also expressed himself in line with the French Max Verstappenwho opposes the idea in two wheels exactly as he is not very convinced of its effectiveness in the championship that sees him as protagonist: “I won’t enjoy them. I do not like them – said the Red Bull standard bearer, as reported by the Spanish website AS – I believe that the emotion of Sunday must be something special, it is the only time we run. That’s how I grew up in the racing world: Sunday is race day“.
The leader of the Formula 1 World Championship believes that Saturday races are not so relevant to the championship in his sport: “Those we have played so far have not drastically changed the results. More or less everyone starts with the same tire and ends up in the same position, because you are afraid of having an accident and starting back in the main race. The important points are awarded there, so everyone tries to finish without problems“.
