The Fairstreet Sports company, organizer of the event together with Dorna, which is the holder of the rights to the championship, announced on Tuesday that the second edition of the event on the Buddh International Circuit, which should have been held on the weekend of 20-22 September, will not take place.
Dorna’s intention is to reschedule the Kazakhstan Grand Prix for the same date, originally scheduled for June but postponed due to the storm that hit the country, leaving it partially flooded.
Although the note does not explicitly mention cancellation, it is assumed that Fairstreet is talking about “moving” the race to March 2025, which would already be next season.
“It was collectively decided to move the race to March next year, specifically in the first or second week,” Pushkar Nath Srivastava, CEO of Fairstreet, said in a statement accessed by Motorsport.com.
In the statement, the manager refers to the weather conditions to justify the decision not to organize the 2024 event. However, Motorsport.com understands that the real reason is the violation of the contract signed at the time with Dorna, in relation to the economic aspect. “The difficult weather conditions in September pose significant challenges for both pilots and stewards, as already observed last year,” the notification continues.
In the next few hours, Dorna is expected to release a statement explaining its point of view on the issue and whether it intends to include Kazakhstan in the final calendar. If it cannot be held on that particular weekend, it is likely that the Sokol International Circuit event will also be cancelled, leaving the championship reduced to 19 races.
The 2024 MotoGP calendar, published at the end of last year, included 22 races, the same as the previous year, but the suspension of the Argentine Grand Prix reduced it to 21, which now, with the “transfer” of India and Kazakhstan’s uncertainty, could reduce the number of races to the same number as those held in 2023.
The first edition of the MotoGP Indian Grand Prix, held at the end of September last year, ended with the victory of Marco Bezzecchi ahead of Jorge Martin and Fabio Quartararo.
