24 hours after the official announcement by Liberty Media, owner of Formula 1, of the purchase of the Dorna Sports company, promoter of the MotoGP World Championship, the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) has expressed its double satisfaction for the news. On the one hand for the entry of a partner of the caliber of Liberty, but also because Carmelo Ezpeleta will remain at the helm of the promotion of his championships.
In an official note issued on Tuesday evening, the federation chaired by the Portuguese Jorge Veigas wishes to issue a “statement on the acquisition of Dorna Sports SL by Liberty Media Corporation. Following the recent public announcement of the acquisition of Dorna, the FIM welcomes I welcome this agreement”, reads the statement.
In the statement, the international federation recalls that the championships managed by Dorna are its “property”, with the promotion of the championships ceded to the Spanish company.
“The FIM is the owner of the following championships and has signed agreements with Dorna Sports SL for the promotion of:
• FIM MotoGP World Championship since 1992;
• MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship since 2015;
• FIM JuniorGP World Championship since 2016;
• FIM Enel MotoE World Championship from 2019 and
• FIM Women Circuit Racing World Championship from 2023.
The FIM is convinced that these World Championships will benefit from the strength and broadcast quality of Liberty Media Corporation and congratulates Greg Maffei and his team on these additions to their portfolio, which will undoubtedly help grow the sport for fans , the teams, the commercial partners and all interested parties”, continues the note in which the Federation blesses the agreement.
Finally, the statement places particular emphasis on Ezpeleta's continuity at the helm of Dorna and the championship.
“The FIM is pleased to continue its excellent relationship with Dorna Sports SL, in particular with Carmelo Ezpeleta and his management team, and looks forward to working together on the growth of this exciting sport,” the statement concludes.
