In the modern era of MotoGP, only two riders have been able to win the world title with two different manufacturers: Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner. The Australian is the only one so far to have brought the roof of the world Ducati, at least in the drivers’ championship. A legendary feat that the Australian phenomenon accomplished in 2007 – just in its second season in the top-class – which allowed the Borgo Panigale house to interrupt a Japanese hegemony that had lasted since 1974 and has never stopped since. For all these reasons, the title won in red is considered by many fans to be the more ‘relevant’ of the two won by # 27.
During an interesting interview with the official MotoGP podcast, Last on the Brakes, Stoner admitted instead that he does not have a particularly good memory of that vintage. Not so much – obviously – for the title won, but for not really enjoying it to the full. “Especially in 2007, I didn’t enjoy it – Stoner revealed – I had been under so much pressure from family and everything else to get there. Even in my races, I have never enjoyed victories that much. I felt mostly a sense of relief. It was done, the weekend was gone. I learned to enjoy these things much later in my career“.
“I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to get things done – added the former Ducati rider, who then left Borgo Panigale to join Honda at the end of 2010 – I didn’t like making mistakes. Probably I didn’t like making mistakes any more than I liked winning. That was more important to me than winning was. I wasn’t exactly a perfectionist, but I came close. Even if I won a race but I made some mistakes, I wasn’t happy “. A constant tension which – together with other reasons linked above all to health – has contributed to Stoner giving up racing at just 27 years old.
