Two races. This is all that separates Valentino Rossi since the end of his career in the world championship, after 26 years of activity crowned by nine world titles, 115 victories and 235 podiums. Hardly any of these last two numbers will be retouched between Portimao and Valencia, but the emotions for the last appearances in the # 46 saddle are not few. Everything is further accentuated by the echo of what we saw in Misano, with the ‘yellow tide’ of fans who greeted the champion from Tavullia at his last Italian race. Rossi had often admitted in the past that he was frightened by the idea of retirement. But now that the time is coming, the Doctor appears calm.
“Staying focused on the races helps me not to think that in ten days I will no longer be a MotoGP rider – declared the Yamaha Petronas standard bearer a Sky Sport MotoGP – they are nothing, if you compare them to 26 years of career “ Rossi pointed out. “Inevitably, I’m very excited. I want to give my best from now to the end of the season. I don’t want to think about Monday after Valencia – the Doctor joked – for the moment I’m still a MotoGP rider and I prefer to think about having fun. I have not regretted the choice of retirement, I have never had any doubts. Today I am quite calm, but you have to see how I will be when that time comes“.
The future is cars and in particular the GT. Rossi confirmed this choice, but without going into further details, leaving several hypotheses on the table. “In January I will race in Abu Dhabi with Uccio and Luca Marini, as we have done for the last three years. But I haven’t decided on the rest yet – Rossi admitted – there are two to three competitions to choose from. Sprint and endurance races, the World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series. But I don’t know if I’m fast enough. I have some good offers, but cars are a new book for me “he concluded.
