Alex Rins is having the best start to the season since arriving in MotoGP, with two podiums in the two races at Termas and Austin, and a spectacular comeback built on Sunday in Portimao. He started from the penultimate place of the starting grid and finished fourth, a position that could have been even better if he hadn’t been without the front tire.
“When I arrived at Aleix Espargaro I no longer had the front tire on the right side, so I preferred to stay there. I made an attempt to overtake, I saw that I couldn’t and I let those in front pull me to secure fourth place ”, explained Rins at the end of the Portuguese Grand Prix.
The fourth place came after a comeback of almost 20 positions, many recovered on the first lap: “I don’t even know what I did at the start. The traffic light was far away. I took the winger and it was a risk, but crossing the finish line 10th or 11th having started almost last is not easy at all. Maybe I value the comeback from Portimao more than the Austin race. Starting last is not easy ”.

A result that combined with the fall of Enea Bastianini leads him to be in second position in the general classification, level on points with the winner of the race and world leader Fabio Quartararo: “The good thing about this weekend is the result, but also my trust. Not many people showed me the support I got today. It may be that now the perspective changes. Now I have more control of myself and my driving style. I felt much more clearly where the limit lies ”.
One of the keys to this improvement, net of the personal level, is the bike of 2022: “Maybe thanks to the evolution of the engine we can feel the bike better. At the end of last year I was in bad shape, but we did a great pre-season this year, with my trainers ”.
On the future in Suzuki, Alex Rins confirms what he says from the first race: “From Qatar they told us that they wanted to continue with both riders. Talking with Livio Suppo and knowing that he has faith in me is very important “. Furthermore, after a weekend of many doubts due to the wet on the track, the Spaniard underlines the great work in the garage: “Having a good technical team alongside is very important”.
