He is the first of the non-Ducati riders and the only one who seems to be able to interrupt the Desmosedici’s hegemony: Fabio Quartararo opens the second row of the Thai Grand Prix and showed an excellent pace also in terms of the race. However, qualifying proved the Borgo Panigale Reds right and the reigning world champion had to settle for a fourth position in qualifying, just over two tenths from poleman Marco Bezzecchi.
It was not an easy session for El Diablo, once again forced to fight with a Yamaha in evident technical deficit. The M1 pays for the power of the engine in Buriram, especially in comparison to the Ducatis, which proved unbeatable once again: “It was very tough, I think we had a lot of potential, especially in terms of pace. In my time attack I gave everything as always, but we are very limited by the engine. We know how much and where we lose, but in any case I gave my best ”.
Quartararo struggles on a track that three years ago, on the occasion of the last weekend in Thailand before the pandemic, saw him start from pole and fight for victory with Marc Marquez until the end. After three seasons, things have changed and the Frenchman explains the causes, which lie in the grip and in the big steps forward of the opponents: “In 2019 the grip was much higher than this weekend. I think we had a good ride today. Our bike is also going much faster than three years ago, but the others have improved a lot ”.
As now happens every Sunday, the Yamaha rider struggles to overtake in the race with an M1 that does not allow him to fight as he would like to be able to recover positions: “The only point where I can try to overtake is the last corner. I also feel very good at turns 9, 10 … but I think the last corner of the last lap is the only point where we can try something ”. In this situation, Quartararo does not want to take risks: “In the race, even maintaining the qualifying position would be fine for me”.
