The season of defense of the world title for Fabio Quartararo it couldn’t have started worse. The 2021 world champion in Qatar, on the fast Lusail track where last year the Iwata manufacturer had dominated by winning both races, achieved a ninth place finish only useful to limit the damage, but certainly far from encouraging for the continuation of the championship. The fact that among the direct rivals for the title – at least thinking about the ‘grid’ on the eve – only Marc Marquez did better than him is a small consolation. After the race, the French driver underlined – together with all his home mates – the chronic lack of speed on the straight of the Japanese M1.
A problem, that of top speed, very easy to find – the Lusail speed trap data are merciless, with all Iwata’s bikes last in this statistic – but definitely less easy to solve. The man from Nice is convinced that his team should concentrate above all on the chassis, approving a solution that allows him to limit damage more easily on fast tracks. Precisely for this reason the goal and the hope – of # 20 would be to have one hand solution within the Mugello racenotoriously a hunting ground for well equipped motorbikes at a speed level.
“The old frame is from 2019, I think we only have this – Quartararo explained, as reported by the site The Race – and I think we could have a new one at Mugello. We tested this aerodynamic package at Sepang and we haven’t lost so much, but we need the one package, with fewer wings. We need more speed. Mugello [come deadline] that is fine – granted the reigning champion, who takes it for granted that he will suffer in Argentina and limit the damage elsewhere – in Indonesia it worked quite well. In Austin, I think, it will work out not so badly. In Jerez it will be better. In Le Mans so and so. So Mugello is clearly the race where, if they don’t bring a new one, I’ll ask them to homologate the old one “he concluded.
