In his four-year experience in MotoGP with KTM, Miguel Oliveira he was certainly among the most difficult riders to decipher in terms of consistency and sheer speed. While on the one hand the four victories achieved spread over three years cannot go unnoticed, on the other hand they counterbalance the just ten arrivals in the top 5, four of which consecutive and concentrated between May and June 2021. This swing of results has made sure that the Portuguese never managed to finish in a better position than the ninth final in the drivers’ standings and in this championship he is tenth. Currently there are 22 points that separate him from Brad Binder, with the South African who gave an overall better feeling about his potential, so much so that KTM to bet on him as the teammate of the new arrival Jack Miller in 2023.
The Germans of Speedweek have reconstructed the last few weeks on the Oliveira market: over the weekend in Mugello, the Portuguese informed his technicians of the decision to separate from KTM, publicly confirming his intention to leave the Austrian brand at the Sachsenring. And also in Germany there were the first contacts with Aprilia and Massimo Rivola, despite a draft agreement already reached with Ducati to replace Enea Bastianini in the Gresini team. At that point Nadia Padovani, owner of the team, refused to pay Oliveira’s salary, preferring to turn her attention to Alex Marquez, who brought in 1 million euros from sponsor Estrella Galicia. The only real obstacle between Oliveira and Aprilia RNF – the Razali facility – was the relaunch of KTM, in the form of a three-year proposal to stay within the GasGas Tech3 brand.
Last August 26 the deadline for Oliveira expired, which would have it like this declined the Austrian proposalthus paving the way for the passage in Aprilia RNF, with the official announcement that it should arrive tomorrow, Wednesday 31 August.
