Martin, what a mistake
A huge strategic advantage of those who lead the standings is that they can wait for the choices of the others without risking strange strategies. Yet, in the Misano race, Jorge Martin he threw this advantage in the bin: after six laps the championship leader took a huge risk, stopping to mount the wet bike at the first drops of rain, unlike Francesco Bagnaia, who was ahead of him on the track.
Unfortunately for Martin, the rain fell on Misano for only one lap: soon the #89 found himself with rain tyres on a dry track; realising his mistake, the Spaniard returned to the pits a second time to save at least 15th place and the point in the standings.
Martin’s words
In an attempt to gain five points, which he could have done even with the same tyres, Martin lost 19: a strategic harakiri. And after the race the Spaniard does not absolve himself: “It was a strategic error. Maybe if I had been clearer about the conditions that would come after, I would not have stopped. And ‘I definitely should have waited and done what Bagnaia didwho was my main opponent“, this is the comment to Sky Sports MotoGP. “I definitely should have talked a bit more with the team, I would have had clearer ideas. Now there is more of a fight in the World Championship, in the end it is important to be there at the end: I think that me and ‘Too bad we’ll still be ahead“.
Doubled, Martin could only wait for the checkered flag: “From then on I tried to do my best, but behind a group that I couldn’t overtake, because otherwise I would have been black flagged. So I waited there for the end of the race, taking a point. At least I know I’m fast, I think that today I could have played with ‘Pecco’ if it hadn’t rained, and this is important“.
