In the week off from the races that is accompanying the MotoGP riders towards the highly anticipated round of Phillip Island, the main topic of discussion among fans and professionals is that of team orders. The protagonist of this thorny controversy is obviously the Ducati, who dreams with Pecco Bagnaia of breaking a fast of success in the drivers’ championship that has lasted for a long time in 2007. The statements made in recent weeks by Marco Bezzecchi and Johann Zarco, who made it known that they had not voluntarily attacked the Piedmontese centaur so as not to steal valuable points in the duel with Fabio Quartararo and Aleix Espargarò, they generated predictable controversy within the paddock. What many fans don’t like is that help for Bagnaia is coming from Ducati riders who, however, are not part of his own team, but race in satellite teams.
Riding the wave of this debate – somewhat provocatively – was the official MotoGP account itself. On Instagram and Twitter, in fact, the page of the premier class of two wheels asked the fans, asking for their opinion on the team orders. The majority of those who replied in the comments said they were against this practice, but the ‘party’ of the in favor has enlisted a rather heavy name among its ranks: that of Jorge Lorenzo. The Majorcan champion, three times world champion in MotoGP, in fact responded with a peremptory one “Yes” to the fateful question, attracting a lot of criticism from the fans. Many have accused him of the title won in 2015in which a strange transversal alliance was created between him and Marc Marquez against Valentino Rossi, of whom Lorenzo was a Yamaha teammate and main antagonist in the standings.
It should be remembered how Lorenzo himself hesitated not a little inhelping Andrea Dovizioso in the 2017 season, when they both played for Ducati and the Italian got to fight for the world title in the last race against Marc Marquez, who later emerged as the winner of that contest. The Swiss expressed the opposite opinion to Lorenzo Dominique AegerterMotoE champion in 2022, who said he was against the hypothesis of ‘arranged’ position swaps in the race by a team.
