“A rookie mistake, I was too far and too fast”. So Fabio Quartararo commented on the mistake that knocked him out of the Dutch Grand Prix after a few laps. The Yamaha rider tried to attack Aleix Espargarò in the hairpin to the left using the change of direction after the long stretch to be tackled in the bend to the right, a maneuver that ended with the closing of the steering and an obligatory digression for Aleix Espargarò in the gravel .
“The races are like this, next time it will be my turn, Fabio has such confidence on his Yamaha that he can attempt very aggressive maneuvers”, Aleix Espargarò glissed at the end of the race when he received a prompt apology from his neighbor in Andorra. The Race Commissioners have decided to sanction Fabio Quartararo with a long lap penalty to be served at Silverstone for irresponsible driving.
A penalty that raises more than a question in the light of the episode itself, especially when compared with many other mistakes made by other riders both this season and the previous one. For example, Quartararo’s mistake is not so different from the one committed by Francesco Bagnaia in Losail in Qatar in the first act of 2022 when Pecco involved Jorge Martin in the fall. Yamaha team manager Meregalli defined the penalty “Hard and not consistent with what was decided in the past”.
Also Chaz Davies on Twitter criticized the Stewards’ decision, a deterrent according to the former Superbike rider for riders to attempt a simple overtaking: “The Commissioners are doing a magnificent job of inviting the riders to give up racing in the future. This decision is a clear failure to distinguish an unfortunate race accident from a maneuver instead operated by really driving without caring about anything ”. Even the Welshman therefore fully exonerates Quartararo.
FIM MotoGP stewards panel: doing an excellent job of deterring riders from actually racing in future. A basic failure to recognize an unfortunate racing incident vs blatant reckless riding.
