The official separation with Maverick Viñales logically caused a domino effect in MotoGP. Not only will the Spaniard go to Aprilia (and he could even race there as early as 2021), but Yamaha has had to run for cover. The Iwata team has in fact chosen Cal Crutchlow as a replacement for the Spaniard, at least for the Silverstone race on 29 August (no other dates are mentioned from the words that Yamaha used). The British therefore leaves the Petronas team with immediate effect and will drive an official M1, as a teammate of Fabio Quartararo. The new replacement for Franco Morbidelli will be Jake Dixon, promoted by the Moto2 team.

“It is a privilege to be part of Yamaha. At first I was supposed to do three races in Petronas, but the plans have changed. I want to thank the team and look forward to riding for the Factory teamCrutchlow commented.
Great satisfaction, of course, also for Dixon: “Getting to MotoGP is the goal of a lifetime and succeeding this year, in the home Grand Prix, is truly special. It will be very difficult, but I can’t wait to get on the Yamaha M1, it will be exciting. I didn’t sleep last night, I kept thinking about this moment. It is a dream that comes true“. Team boss Petronas Razlan Razali he added: “This is a unique opportunity for Jake, which thus can show what he can do even on a Yamaha YZR-M1. We will not set any goals in terms of results, he must gain experience in his home Grand Prix while Franco continues his recovery“.
