Adversaries, rivals, but never enemies. Contrary to what happened with most of the riders with whom he competed for success in races and championships, Valentino Rossi has always had with Loris Capirossi a beautiful relationship. The two were companions in Aprilia in 1998 and then adversaries for the rest of their careers but they have never hidden mutual respect and friendship. Many battles have seen them protagonists together on the track, first in the 250 and then in the premier class, also facing the transformation from 500 to MotoGP. On the sidelines of the Doctor’s retreat, which took place on Sunday on the Valencia circuit, Capirossi recalled some special moments linked to the relationship with his friend-rival.
“Ours has always been an extremely correct rivalry above all, there has always been enormous respect between us. In the years of the 500 it was often the three of us, me, him and Max (Biaggi) who played for the podiums – wrote the pilot from Castel San Pietro Terme in an article published on Gazzetta dello Sport – Valentino has always been very fast and over the years we have created some wonderful races between us. If I have to think about my best victories against Valentino I would say Sepang 2005, even if the historic one was that of Assen 1999, with the 250. our podiums together is that they have always been a great party, whether one or the other won. Among the defeats that burn me, however, there is Sepang 2006. I wanted to do an encore, I tried until the end but I didn’t, and not winning that day broke my mind a bit. But when you lose against someone of his level in the end it can also feel good, even if a driver always wants to win“.
Today Understandx on the other hand, on the MotoGP management board, as a reference point for safety on the track. From this point of view, certainly, Rossi’s absence from the starting grid for the next championship represents a hard blow for him too. “In my opinion it will leave a great void for the character he is. He has really done a lot for this sport – concluded Capirossi – it made it better, it brought in fans who would never have looked at the bikes, widening the range from 10 to 80 years old. We will miss his absence a lot, because he made the history of our sport. And it will always be a legend “.
