Seven Ducatis in the first eight positions, the only intruder Fabio Quartararo fifth on the Yamaha, the only Desmosedici absent from the appeal was that of Fabio Di Giannantonio, 19th. Chicane or no chicane at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, Ducati dictates the law with Johann Zarco very fast ahead of Jack Miller, Jorge Martin and Fabio Quartararo, who preceded his rival for the title Francesco Bagnaia.
The rider who grew up in the VR46 riders academy commented on a difficult day like this: “It was a rather special day this morning, first with the wet tires and then with the slicks, I found myself in a bit of trouble, but in the afternoon we managed to improve. Compared to Quartararo, we are still missing something out of the corner, but we know what we need to focus on to recover. In general, the Ducati Desmosedici GP is proving to have a competitive package, which works really well on this track too: there are a lot of fast Ducati riders here and they can all aim for the podium on Sunday. This is a great stimulus for me, and I’m optimistic for tomorrow’s qualifying ”.
Johann Zarco as at Silverstone he is proving to be very fast on the flying lap. Two weeks ago the Frenchman crashed in the race and in this weekend when he is also waiting for the renewal with Pramac he will go hunting for revenge. Jorge Martin also has to prove something before Ducati’s final decision on Bagnaia’s box-mate in 2023.
Jack Miller instead he will most likely help Bagnaia if the latter does not reach the level of the Australian, who was immediately fast at the Red Bull Ring: “I was immediately at ease from the first laps in the wet and, even in the dry, our basic setup once again proved to work very well. In fact, we didn’t touch anything on the bike and we only worked on the choice of tires and electronics. I like the new chicane and I enjoy it a lot: it allows you to slide the bike and be aggressive both in the change of direction and in the opening of the throttle when exiting the corner. I am satisfied with this first day and confident of being able to do well tomorrow too ”.
