“Serious lightness, I learned my lesson, don’t do it”. Francesco Bagnaia in Ibiza he was involved in a car accident after a nightclub party. The SUV he was driving ended up in a ditch on the other side of the roadway and the officers of the Guardia Civil and Police arrived on the spot and found an alcohol content of 0.87, three times higher than the permitted level which in Spain is 0 , 25.
The Ducati rider in his social message of apology stressed that he is practically teetotal. A motorcycle rider almost by definition weighs little, so it is actually ‘easy’ for a body not accustomed to alcohol to exceed the permitted limits while not having gone beyond a toast or two. Driving after drinking, however, as Bagnaia himself acknowledged, has no extenuating circumstances and obviously the VR46 riders academy rider the driving license was withdrawn.
Bagnaia will certainly be fined by the Spanish authorities and it is highly likely that the Ducati decides to fine your rider for a positivity to an alcohol test which is among the many clauses included in the contracts with which a motorcycle manufacturer takes precautions against its riders (the positivity to an alcohol test or drugs can even lead to dismissal, but certainly Ducati will not deprive itself of its top rider for what must be framed as a lightness, even if it is serious).
According to today’s edition of The Corriere dello Sport there is a risk that a trial will be instituted in Spain, even if a possible conviction would not entail beyond the three-month sentence without further aftermath. The criminal proceedings could lead to the withdrawal of the driving license for a period of between one and four years.
