From -91 to -49 in two races: at the turn of the summer break Francesco Bagnaia with two victories he has practically halved the gap that separates him from Fabio Quartararo in the drivers’ standings. The Ducati rider won at Assen and Silverstone, where El Diablo dominated in 2021, reopening the world championship speech that seemed closed after the crash in Germany, the VR46 riders academy rider’s third serious mistake of the season.
A year ago in Austria the Piedmontese rider only came close to his first career victory in MotoGP on the hills of Styria, a theater that has always exalted the Ducatis thanks to their power and braking efficiency. The Borgo Panigale house is clearly the most competitive at this historic moment in MotoGP and surprisingly second is the other Italian brand in great ascent, Aprilia. Yamaha is clinging to Fabio Quartararo’s talent and class, but in Britain the deficit of power of the M1 was deleterious for the reigning world champion, who inexorably slipped to eighth place.
The script could be repeated at the Red Bull Ring, even if the new chicane introduced for safety reasons before the corner of Curva-3 could partially reduce Ducati’s excessive power. In any case, Bagnaia does not want to think about the championship to continue his streak of successes without pressure: “At Silverstone we managed to recover several points in the overall standings, but for the moment I don’t want to think about the Championship. I have to stay focused, race by race, always trying to get the best possible result. In the last GP I managed to get an unexpected victory and I think it was one of the best of my career. Now we arrive in Austria, on a track that has historically always been in favor of Ducati. We will have to see how it will be now with the new chicane, but I am convinced that there are still the conditions to be able to do well. I am ready and excited to be able to race at the Red Bull Ring again ”.
Jack Miller He showed up in excellent form at Silverstone and will certainly be a driver to keep an eye on in Austria, where he has often come close to the big shot: “I am happy to be back racing in Austria this weekend. The Red Bull Ring is a track that I like and where I have already been on the podium in the past. Last year we were unlucky with a crash in the first race and the rain that surprised us in the second. My goal is to be able to redeem myself this year: we are going through a positive moment and my feelings on the Desmosedici GP are really excellent. I am confident and determined to do well in this race as well ”.
