The young star of world motocross, 19-year-old Austrian Rene ‘Hofer, died after being hit by an avalanche in the Langau area of Austria. The tragedy took place yesterday afternoon and Hofer was one of the three ski mountaineers overwhelmed and killed by the avalanche.
The accident occurred on the Lackenspitze in Tweng in the province of Salzburg. In addition to Hofer, a 24-year-old died and another 19-year-old resuscitated on the spot and then passed away at the hospital in Klagenfurt.
Renè Hofer, polita originally from Muehlviertler and standard bearer of Red Bull, was considered the most promising motocross talent in Austria. Last October Hofer in Pietramurata, Italy, became the first Austrian since Heinz Kinigadner, more than 30 years ago, to win a Grand Prix in one of the two main classes of the Motocross World Championship.
