It is incredible what happened in the final race ad Assen in the category Moto3, in a last lap characterized by a maneuver to the limit of David Munoz that put the word ‘end’ to the fight for the podium for him and his compatriot Masia. To win this spectacular test was Ayumu Sasakipoleman yesterday.
And yet, when the red light went out, it was the rookie Munoz who made an excellent start, to the point of jumping from 4th to 2nd place. Already at the end of the first lap, the young Iberian started a splendid battle with his direct rivals such as Suzuki, Sasaki himself, Guevara, Foggia and Garcia, the latter being the author of a great comeback from 18th place on the grid and all protagonists of a continuous exchange of positions at the top of the standings. In any case, the battle registered a first certainty during the 5th lap, when Guevara he imposed himself in the role of the leader by resisting for a long time the pressure of his direct pursuers. A circumstance that, despite the reduced gap from the leading group, still allowed him to be able to make a small escape, all while the Race Direction punished Dennis Foggiaguilty of having passed the track limit at the last chicane of the Dutch track.
For long stretches of the race, Guevara therefore maintained the first position, with the two Japanese Sasaki and Suzuki fighting for second place, also constantly threatened by Munoz, Masia, McPhee and Foggia, protagonist of an excellent return despite the relegation in 13th place once the long lap penalty. However, at the stroke of the 16th of the 21 laps, the first twists happen: at the entrance to the first corner, Foggia suffers the attack of Munoz, which pushes him outside. The Leopard driver tries to return to the track after having gone over the curb, but in doing so he hits a bollard, falling and further complicating his goals in the world championship standings.
An episode that precedes others even more sensational, especially in the last 3 laps: the long resistance of Guevara is in fact interrupted by the overtaking of Sasaki, with the Japanese of Max Biaggi’s team – 51 years old today – who therefore takes the leadership despite attempts by the Spaniard to overtake. In the following lap, Guevara is even ousted from the podium, but in the last lap everything happens: Munozafter Foggia, he makes another victim and in an attempt to overtake Masia in braking he loses control of the bike, falling and overwhelming his compatriot. McPhee falls on his own at the same bend, also ending up in the gravel and giving a good opportunity to Garciastruggling with Suzuki. While Sasaki crosses the finish line in front of GuevaraGarcia manages to get the better of the other Leopard driver in the photo finish, thus winning 3rd place.
