In 2025, Moto2 and Moto3 will follow MotoGP’s example. Last year, the premier class introduced a change to its format mid-season, which affected the free practice sessions. Following criticism from MotoGP teams and riders, the organizers decided that the first free practice session would not count towards the fight for a direct place in Q2.
This put the focus on the second practice session of the weekend, the only chance the MotoGP riders now have to fight for a place in Q2. Starting next year, this format will also apply to Moto2 and Moto3.
“Following the success of the new format in the MotoGP class, which balances the fight for Q2 with track time for teams and riders to work on set-up, the structure of the Moto2 and Moto3 sessions will change to create consistency across all classes”.
“Consequently, the Moto2 and Moto3 categories will have two free practice sessions which will not count towards participation in Q2 and one practice session on Friday afternoon which will determine who advances directly to Q2,” the Grand Prix Commission said.

In addition to the format change, the Grand Prix Commission has also made a change to the rules relating to races where rain begins to fall on the starting grid. Once again, MotoGP wants to unify all categories and this means that from 2025 onwards, even in Moto2 and Moto3, the bikes will be brought back to the pitlane for adjustments, if necessary, during pre-race procedures.
Furthermore, from 2025, some things will also change from a technical point of view. In Moto3, the maximum price of the chassis and engine “will increase slightly to better balance the increase in costs currently borne by the manufacturers alone”.
Additionally, following the approval of a previous request from a manufacturer to upgrade its Moto3 engine, the freeze on all performance parts (engine and chassis) in the Moto3 class has been extended until the end of 2026. Finally, the Moto2 manufacturers will have more days of private testing available from 2025. The latter only applies to manufacturers with concessions: seven to nine days of testing.
