The S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) entered service with the 15th Special Forces Army of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which covers Moscow and the Central Industrial Region of the country. This is reported on October 13 TASS citing a source close to the military department.
“The first brigade set of S-500 air defense systems entered service with the association, which is on alert for the protection and defense of aerospace over the capital of the country,” said the agency’s interlocutor, without specifying the date and composition of the program.
At the same time, he added that the second S-500 brigade will be put into service in the first half of 2022 under a “multi-year contract.”
On September 16, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Yuri Borisov announced the arrival of the S-500 “Prometheus” anti-aircraft missile systems in the Russian armed forces after state tests.
Test firing of the S-500 air defense system was carried out by the Russian military in July. According to the Ministry of Defense, the tests confirmed the tactical and technical characteristics and reliability of the air defense (air defense) of Russia.
The S-500 Prometheus (ROC Triumfator-M) is a long-range and high-altitude intercept complex with a high anti-missile defense potential, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The system hits not only ballistic, but also aerodynamic targets, and cruise missiles within a radius of about 600 km.
