The conflict between the West and Russia over the war in Ukraine is now “at its peak” and Europe will not return to good relations with Moscow “for at least a generation”. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared this today, assuring that not only many Russians think this way but that the Kremlin itself “considers this assessment to be correct”.
“After the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Western countries began to spread the openly false thesis that we will not stop in Ukraine,” Lavrov said during the 32nd Assembly of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy.
Lavrov then criticized the rhetoric of Western countries, for which Putin will win the war in Ukraine “and then attack NATO, so everyone must urgently arm themselves to the teeth”. The Russian minister criticized “this rhetoric” as part of an increasingly harsh discourse against Russia.
President of the Duma: “The EU violates freedom of the press and expression”
The president of the Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, accused the European Union of censorship and of violating freedom of the press and expression in the aftermath of the EU Council’s decision to suspend the radio and television activities of four media outlets that “spread and support Russian propaganda and the war of aggression against Ukraine” i.e. Voice of Europe, Ria Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
In a post on Telegram, Volodin – a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin – accused the West of double standards, claiming that the European Union has blocked media outlets that spread what he called “alternative views”. In Russia, many opposition media outlets that criticize Putin’s policies are blocked.
