The world of mods is often a gray area, but as a rule, many developers are more than happy to see their game modded by enthusiasts, as it gives the product more longevity and helps it reach more people, thus leading to more revenue. Sometimes though some publishers don’t like mods and now one Mortal Kombat YouTuber and modder is accusing Warner Bros. of having “threatened to destroy” his YouTube channel.
In a lengthy statement on Twitter, ToastedShoes, Australian YouTuber with 800,000 subscribers and 1.7 million followers on TikTok, claims to have received an “Intellectual Property Infringement Notice” directly from Warner Bros. requiring it to delete “all Mortal Kombat 1 videos from [suo] channel”.
The creative was then forced to hide many videos. The problem is that this is not a hobby for ToastedShoes, but a full-time job with collaborators who are paid by the results of his videos. Blocking the channel means making several people lose their jobs.
In an email to Eurogamer, ToastedShoes said have not yet “received a response from Warner Bros. or NetherRealm regarding the cease and desist order” and, as far as he knows, is “still the only creator to have been targeted.”
The full message from the modder
“Warner Bros. is threatening to take down my YouTube channel and I don’t know what to do. Here’s what happened.”
“This morning I received an intellectual property infringement notice directly from Warner Brothers, stating that the Mortal Kombat mods in my content ‘infringe’ their intellectual property rights. I have been requested to delete all videos of Mortal Kombat 1 from my channel, otherwise I will receive copyright strikes and as a result my channel will be completely deleted.”
“For over 6 months Warner Bros. has had no problem with anyone modding the game, and the noobde himself has shared and praised countless mod videos and clips. My mod clips have over 1 billion views across all platforms, allowing me to bring attention to the game and continue to support the team of developers I work with. My team of modders work with me both part-time and full-time and the income from these videos covers their salaries.”
“I can’t even respond to the email I received directly from Warner Bros. So I have no way of contacting them or asking them what exactly they consider to be copyright infringement. Additionally, I appear to be the only content creator I know of who Warner Bros. . sent a cease and desist order.”
“Due to all of this, I am now forced to remove all videos from my channel. This is not what I wanted to do, but I feel like I have no other choice. There’s not much else I can do at the moment, so feel free to retweet this message to attract the attention of Warner Bros.”
We will have to wait and see how the situation develops. Speaking instead of the game, Ed Boon suggests the arrival of costumes based on the 1995 filmEd Boon suggests the arrival of costumes based on the 1995 film.
