Mortal Kombat 1 makes its return one year after its launch on consoles and PC with the first expansion, Kaos Sovereign, an addition that promises to expand the story and roster of NetherRealm Studios’ fighting game. The narrative premise is intriguing: Havik, the demon of chaos, threatens to destroy the new timeline created by Liu Kang. Sektor and Cyrax, now cybernetic agents serving the Lin Kuei, are sent to the Realm of Chaos to stop him. The campaign, lasting about two hours, focuses on an infiltration into a macabre dungeon.
The expansion introduces three new playable characters: Sektor, Cyrax and Noob Saibot. Cyrax presents himself as a fluid and strategic fighter, capable of trapping opponents with his bombs. Sektor, easier to use, relies on quick combos and ranged attacks. Noob Saibot, while a welcome return, is less agile than his previous incarnations. The addition of these fighters, iconic figures of the series, is certainly a point in favor of the expansion. It remains to be seen how the guest characters (Ghostface from Scream, Conan the Barbarian and T-1000) who will be released soon at no additional cost will integrate.
In addition to the new characters, Kaos Sovrano also introduces new Fatalities, Brutalities and the long-awaited Animalities. The latter, absent in Mortal Kombat X and MK11, make their triumphant return with exaggerated and fun animations. The Animalities are available for free to all owners of MK1, while the new Fatalities and Brutalities are exclusive to those who purchase the expansion. Kaos Sovereign doesn’t make any major changes to the core gameplay, but it offers new ways to finish off your opponents in style.
Kaos Sovrano leaves you with a bitter taste for some shortcomings. The absence of new Kameo Fighters, a key element of MK1’s gameplay, is inexplicable. Furthermore, the price of 50 euros is excessive considering the amount of content offered at launch. Khaos Sovereign is an expansion that alternates light and shadow. The new characters are well made and fun to use, the cutscenes are great, but the story is too short and the price is high. NetherRealm Studios has taken a step in the right direction, but there is still room for improvement. The expansion is definitely recommended for the most avid Mortal Kombat fans, who cannot miss it.
