In Morocco university professors and teachers have been held responsible for sexual harassment and blackmail of female students, AFP news agency reported.
An extensive #metoo-style movement has erupted on Moroccan social media, with students reporting the sexual harassment they face as being perpetrated by university staff.
The news agency interviewed the 24-year-old student Nadiaa, who said he had been expelled from Hassan I University near Casablanca.
“The excuse was that I had cheated on the exam. But the fact was that I had refused to consent to the sexual blackmail of one of my professors. ”
Traditionally in Morocco, complaining about sexual harassment has been difficult, but times are changing. Nadia was taken back to study at her university, while five professors from the same school have been tried to answer charges of harassment.
One of the professors was previously sentenced in January to two years in prison for demanding sex from students in exchange for good grades. Four other professors will be brought to justice on Monday.
Female students have been encouraged to share their experiences on social media-focused sites. Complaints have been received from many educational institutions – nearly 70 from a single university alone, AFP says.
The activity of students and NGOs is also quoted on the board. Minister of Education Abdelatif Miraouin according to Moroccan schools, there is now a “zero tolerance” for sexual harassment.
In 2018, a law was passed in Morocco that, for the first time, made sexual harassment a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment. However, the law has been criticized for not addressing the problems sufficiently broadly and explicitly.
