The Moroccan Ministry of Youth and Culture said in a statement, “This selection came to consolidate our country’s commitment to working on the prosperity of books and democracy.”
The Ministry considered this coronation an occasion “in which the desired convergence is achieved between the efforts of civil society components to build a reading society that provides opportunities for integration and equal opportunities, especially among young people.”
She added, “Over the course of an entire year, Moroccan literature will receive special care and attention, through a program of creative activities, workshops, discussions, trainings and exhibitions, with the aim of embodying the image of Rabat as the capital of books and reading.”
Madrid was chosen as the first World Book Capital in 2001, followed by a series of cities, including Alexandria in Egypt in 2002, Beirut in Lebanon in 2009, and Sharjah in the Emirates in 2019.
