Mexico City.- The National Council of Morena called for an extraordinary National Congress for the renewal of the presidency and general secretary of the party.
In a meeting held this Sunday, the Morena National Council approved the call and summoned national councilors to meet on September 22 at a convention center in Mexico City.
“The renewal of the presidency and general secretary of the National Executive Committee is hereby established so that the new leadership can take office on October 1, 2024. “On the other hand, the need arises to extend the term of office of the party’s internal bodies until 2027 in order to standardize all internal processes of statutory renewal,” the call states.
So far, the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, is emerging as the unity candidate for the presidency of Morena, and the possibility has arisen that Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of President López Obrador, may aspire to the general secretary or the secretary of organization position.
The intention of the National Congress of Morena is that the holders of both the Presidency and the General Secretariat take office on the same day, and that a new draft of basic documents be approved. In addition, the possibility of renewing other secretaries was left open, which could be vacated by those secretaries who have been elected to positions of popular representation or are invited to participate in a government emanating from Morena.
