Morelia, Michoacan.- “Morelia is the most violent municipality of Michoacán, and of course if you see it in absolute numbers, of course it is, but it is not measured that way, it is measured by the rate of 100,000 inhabitants“, he pointed Alexander Gonzalez CussiMorelia Security Commissioner.
During a talk he had with the media, the commissioner assured that the news about Morelia being the most violent city in Michoacán is wrong, since they fail to point out that crime incidence is not measured in absolute numbersbut in relation to the number of inhabitants, he gave Mexico City as an example, to explain the impact of homicides.
“Three homicides in Morelia are not the same as three homicides in Mexico City”, highlighted Cussi.
He acknowledged that there is currently an upward trend in intentional homicides, reported that in the previous administration of Alfonso Martinez Alcazarmayor of Morelia, which ended three years ago, had “an average of 11 homicides per month, in 2018 -2021 it rose to 25, today we have an average of 34”he explained.
“If you look, there was a growth of 120% in the last three years, which is where the disorder begins and, therefore, we find a general rise, practically 100% at the arrival of the administration”, detailed the head of Morelia Security.
But he recalled that the numbers that are currently being reflected only correspond to the first months of the administration, that we will have to wait longer to be able to talk about trends, he said that it is important to make the current numbers known in order to understand in the future the outcome of the policies.
At the time the incidence of intentional homicides was compared with the statistics of the national averageit was noted that Morelia it’s doublebut below the average for Michoacán.
“The problem is much more serious in the state than in the capital itself”, accused González Cussi.
And he reported that there are other cities more dangerous than Morelia, recalling that the incidence of crime is measured by the population rate, for which he pointed out that the capital is located at number 30 of the 113 municipalities of Michoacán, and in the fifth with populations greater than 90 thousand people.
“The first place is Zamora, second Zitácuaro, Uruapan, Tarímbaro and fifth Morelia, in populations greater than 90 thousand people”, said the commissioner.
He recalled that at the national level Zamora continues to be the most dangerous city, followed by Colima, Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Zitácuaro, Villa de Álvarez, Iguala, among others, and that Morelia is at number 32 on the national list.
He relates the problem of intentional homicide in the capital of Michoacán with the problem that afflicts the entire state, which is the presence of cartels Y criminal cellsreporting that between 90 and 95% of murders are caused by a firearm.
“Crimes are being committed such as intentional homicide with firearms, a clear mark of organized crime”, Cussi said, but I take the opportunity to clarify that this is not his responsibility and stressed that the municipality does not sit idly by in the face of the problem and that they do face it.
