This Saturday, March 5, more than a thousand large trucks gathered on the outskirts of Washington to protest against the Covid-19 restrictions. The so-called “People’s Convoy” is inspired by the “Freedom Convoy” from the Canadian capital Ottawa and threatens to reach the US capital in the coming days.
More than a thousand trucks, RVs and cars arriving from all over the country gathered outside the US capital, Washington, on Saturday. Many of those who participated in this rally said they supported “medical freedom” and wanted an end to mask mandates.
The main American cities have already withdrawn the mandatory use of masks and other sanitary measures. Washington will be one of them starting March 12.
One of the participants, Bobby Johnson, explained his frustration: “The government crossed the line and that’s the bottom line. They are beginning to intrude on our freedoms. We have a choice about what we put into our bodies and these children need a future.”
Several protesters carried banners in support of former President Donald Trump and against the current government.
Possible arrival in central Washington
It is not clear if the intention of the convoy is to reach the center of the capital or not. A website for the protest said they were not planning to do so, but one of the participants, who describes himself as the lead trucker, said he would make it to the city center. “That flag on the back of my truck will go down to Constitution Avenue between the White House and the Washington Monument,” the man said.
At the same time, several people participated in a demonstration against the arrival of the convoys in central Washington.
Police officers are ready
State and local authorities have been preparing for the arrival of the convoy for weeks. According to a February 26 bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), if the movement reaches downtown Washington, it could disrupt traffic and the work of emergency services. Law enforcement officials also fear the possible involvement of extremists who could take advantage of the protest to carry out violent acts.
The DHS explained that the restrictions due to Covid-19 have been a “key driver” of extremist violence within American society, so the possibility of an attack is greater in these types of events.
The “People’s Convoy” originated in California and was inspired by the Canadian “Freedom Convoy”. Originally, this movement was created in Ottawa by trucks protesting health travel restrictions between the United States and Canada, blockading the Canadian capital for almost a month. The movement then spread to the rest of the world, and particularly to Europe, where it became a general anti-restriction movement due to Covid-19.
