A period of eight months of execution and an investment of 8.4 million of euros. These are the figures of the first phase of the works to recover the Huerva River and its surroundings in Zaragoza in order to improve environmental quality and connect this enclave with the city.
The Zaragoza City Council has already begun to work on the recovery of this area of the Huerva River and its banks. This action, which is undertaken through the municipal company Zaragoza Ecocityhas started in the area of the Emperor Augustus bridge.
The project includes an action throughout 2.1 kilometers of banks in several sections. The first of them includes from the Blasco del Cacho Bridge to the covering of the river in Gran Vía. A very degraded area as the river passes, sandwiched between several buildings. In addition, action will be taken in the section between Miguel Server Street and the mouth of the Ebro.
The first phase “is the least grateful,” said the mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, during her visit to the works. However, he pointed out that it is “essential to be able to transform the banks into a space with better biodiversity and which we can enjoy in a more accessible and safe way.”
Among the works that have already been undertaken include the cleaning and weeding of the riverbed environment, in addition to opening access to have space next to the river from where different tasks are carried out. Material collection areas have also been set up in surrounding streets. The access points are in the old Sopesens nurseries, the Bruno Solano-Manuel Lasala square, the lower square of the Emperor Augustus bridge and two green areas located in the old dog track and next to the CDM Alberto Maestro.
In accordance with the deadlines, in the coming weeks the old concrete and brick structures next to the riverbed will be removed for better water filtration and to make way for the future riverside forest, expanding space and reducing the risk of street flooding in the event. of floods.
Vegetation management will also begin with the removal of dead or damaged specimens. treat invasive species such as ailanthus to maintain only those that are necessary and begin replacing them with native vegetation.
In this first stage, work will also be done to improve the quality of the waters of the Huerva River. Likewise, the construction of an anti-pollution storm tank is planned, which will allow the storage of wastewater that mixes with rainwater during heavy rains for subsequent management in the purification network.
Other actions that have also begun focus on the renewal of sanitation pipes to expand their capacity and separate them from the riverbed when possible.
In terms of water, the works will also be used to modernize the drinking water supply network and eliminate old fiber cement and gray cast iron pipes on several streets in the area.
The Huerva recovery project also includes outlining the new pedestrian paths to walk along the riverbed in some sections. The three new paths will be floodable, just like those along the Ebro River, and will have permeable pavements that help filter and use the water.
The first of these paths will run parallel to Manual Lasala Street to the Emperador Augusto Bridge, while the second will go from the Goya Avenue Bridge to Gran Vía. The third will be on the right bank, between Río Huerva and La Luz streets. .
The works have financing of the Zaragoza City Council, the Government of Aragon and the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union-NextGenerationEU.
