The CHS, which lacks the necessary personnel, has so far sanctioned 5,572 irregular hectares and has another 1,658 in the pipeline.
Without having sufficient technical and administrative personnel, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) is focused on processing the sanctioning files of the 8,640 hectares that it has classified as illegal irrigation in the Campo de Cartagena, out of a total of approximately 50,000. The latest balance of the basin organization indicates that it is approaching that figure, since the final sanctioning files reach 5,572 hectares, according to the data provided to LA VERDAD by the CHS and the Ministry for Ecological Transition
In a large part of the farms sanctioned by the basin organization, it has been decided to stop irrigating voluntarily
Vice President Teresa Ribera set out in February, during her last visit to the Region of Murcia, her goal that all procedures against illegal irrigation be under way in May. At this time, CHS agents have denounced an area of 7,749 hectares, out of a total of 8,640 considered illegal. Of this surface, there are 5,572 already sanctioned in firm, and another 1,658 with the files in process. There are also 500 hectares denounced by the agents in which it is not appropriate to initiate the sanction process.

Of the total sanctioning files, 276 have been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Agriculture so that it can act within its powers, which correspond to 4,148 hectares. In principle, this surface must be restored to its previous state. So far they have done 912 hectares. In addition to this, in a large part of the sanctioned farms, the owners have voluntarily decided to stop irrigating and in other cases the CHS has sealed off the water intake.
Aid in digitization
The National Government, on the other hand, will allocate more than 9.4 million to the Region for adaptation to the risk of flooding and for digitizing the water cycle. This was decided yesterday by the Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, within the Recovery and Resilience Plan for the preservation of the coastal space and water resources.
The Confederation repairs the fault and pumps water from the Albujón again
The Segura Hydrographic Confederation yesterday reactivated the pumping system of the Rambla del Albujón to stop the entry of nutrients into the Mar Menor. The facilities were paralyzed as a result of the repairs that were being carried out next to the Pinatar Arena. The basin organization maintains the drive active after the ruling of the TSJ that annuls the order of the Ministry of Agriculture that allowed the fortuitous discharge to the Mar Menor in case of breakdown or stoppage of said pumping. The CHS will study the court ruling, while the Ministry indicates that the water can continue to be extracted, since its environmental permit is not necessary. Imida technicians, on the other hand, yesterday took 41 samples of water from the Mar Menor from the beach of Las Palmeras de Los Alcázares to Punta Brava, and all of them offer an average oxygen value of 7.02 milligrams per liter, which represents “acceptable” levels. Only one of the 41 points analyzed is below 4 milligrams per liter (3.88 milligrams per liter in Punta Brava), which is close to hypoxic values.
The Ingenio Foundation presents its measures to clean up the lagoon in Brussels
The representatives of the Ingenio Foundation presented yesterday in the European Parliament a study “that warns that the death of fish in the Mar Menor is caused by wastewater.” Accompanied by farmers from the Region of Murcia, the foundation presented to a group of MEPs the recent analyzes carried out in the salty lagoon, while detailing the measures of the ‘environmental ring’ proposed by this entity to protect and recover the Mar Menor, he pointed out in a statement. The data was presented by the director of the Ingenio Foundation, Natalia Corbalán, and the agronomist Pedro Fernández. The MEPs Juan Ignacio Zoido (PP) and Margarita de la Pixa (Vox) attended, as well as representatives of other European parliamentary groups, including Ciudadanos.
The Senate rejects a proposal by Vox to open the golas of the lagoon
The Commission for the Ecological Transition of the Senate yesterday rejected a motion presented by Vox, to which amendments were added by the Popular Parliamentary Group, to urge the Government to launch four proposals aimed at recovering the Mar Menor, such as the opening of las golas or improve the sanitation of rainwater runoff into the salt lake. The legislative initiative had the votes in favor of the PP and Vox and was rejected by ERC, PSOE and Izquierda Confederal, while Teruel Existen and Junts per Cat abstained. Another measure proposed by the initiative was to build separate sanitation with discharges of clean rainwater to the Mar Menor. In the same way, the Vox motion proposed to execute and develop a double desalination system, with the elimination of brine from the water extracted from the aquifers.
