More than 5,000 people arrested in Russia for protesting the war

During the four-day war launched by Russia against Ukraine, Russian authorities detained 5,250 people for demonstrating against the conflict, according to OVD-info, an organization specializing in monitoring arrests and defending detainees, reported on Sunday.

The organization, labeled in Russia as a “foreign agent”, has been updating the numbers of arrests of Russians who oppose the “special military operation” ordered on February 24 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

OVD-info denounced this Sunday (27) that in Saint Petersburg police carried out violent arrests, with at least three wounded among the protesters.

A young man had his arm broken, a girl lost consciousness after being hit in the head and a man was thrown over a fence.

According to the organization, police photographed and fingerprinted the detainees and denied medical care to an elderly man.

A similar situation occurred in Moscow, where police threatened detainees with charges of insubordination if they refused to take fingerprints.

OVD-info also reported abuses in the cities of Kazan, Novosibirsk and Nizhny Novgorod.

Despite this, hundreds of thousands of Russians continue to take to the streets to protest the war.

This Sunday, a group of about 500 young people demonstrated in central Moscow shouting “No to war”, but without carrying banners or flags.
