Hundreds of bodies were found on the city’s streets and in ditches after Ukraine regained control of the region.
Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk said 412 bodies had been collected and exhumed in the city. The region was the target of a massacre during the Russian occupation in March.
According to the Chief Executive, 117 bodies, including children, were removed from a mass grave located next to a church. Moscow denies responsibility for the killings. Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time that the massacre in Bucha is a “Western staging”.
The bodies were discovered after Ukrainian military forces retook Russian-held areas around Kiev. Ukraine says it reconquered the region on April 2.
Russia announced last Tuesday (19.Apr.2022) the beginning of a “new phase” of the war in Ukraine, with the intensification of attacks against the Donbass region, in eastern Ukraine. Two days later, the Kremlin said it had taken over Mariupol, a city in southern Ukraine.
