The European Consumers Organization, which integrates 44 consumers organizations in 31 European countries, have supported the historic fine imposed by the Ministry of Consumer to several low -cost airlines, among other reasons receivable supplements for hand luggage or for reserved adjacent seats to accompany dependent people.
The Bureau Européen des Unions of Consommateurs (Beuc in its acronym in French) has met in Madrid on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the organization of consumers and users (OCU). In that act, the consumer minister, Pablo Bustinduy stressed that “more and more complaints are added in European countries for abusive airline practices.” “We are working for institutions to stop protecting companies more than consumers,” he stressed.
At the end of November, consumption confirmed a historical fine of 179 million euros to five airlines for abusive practices. The main one, Ryanair, which was sanctioned with more than 107 million euros. After that step, the Irish company launched a campaign in which he called Pablo Bustnduy of “Clown.”
This Thursday, Bustinduy has indicated that Spain is leading a change in trend in Europe so that the rights of citizenship are put to the abusive practices of large companies “so that consumer relations are more democratic, fair and transparent.”
He has also claimed that this change in trend is transferred to the rest of European countries, for which the work of consumer organizations in the different states of the continent is essential. “Companies cannot systematically violate consumer rights with impunity” and “no company, however large or powerful, is above the law.” “We have been the first to act, but we will not be the only ones,” he stressed.
For his part, Agustín Reyna, general director of the BEUC, has asked the European Commission “to remain on the side of consumers against companies that abuse consumers and violate European law.”
