In 1963, the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía was established in Totana, being the origin in the city of the Procession of Silence, also known as the Manolas, since in 1969 women joined this procession. In 1972, the image of the Blessed Virgin of Hope and the figure of the ladies dressed in a black dress and mantilla, scapular, rosary and candle were joined.
More than 200 manolas once again fulfilled the tradition and paraded last Wednesday from the church of Santiago through the old and narrow streets of the old town. At the exit of the carvings and thrones, the Musical Group performed two songs with the streets only illuminated by the candles of the penitents.
Both the manolas and the manolos, which are the Nazarenes who process with the Christ of the Agony, keep intact the tradition of not speaking once they put on their costume, neither from their home nor during the procession, which means that a sepulchral silence where only the beating of a drum and the sound of the heels of the manolas stands out. During the journey, a tenor and soprano sound in the darkness, while, as the procession gathers, the sounds of La Madrugá permeate the magical and solemn night.
