Another 31,286 are absent each day with medical leave, according to a report by the Randstad company. The absenteeism rate reached 6.6% in the Region at the end of 2021, one of the highest
A total of 11,732 workers in the Region of Murcia do not go to their jobs on average every day without there being a cause that duly justifies it. If all of them are added to the 31,286 who are absent from their jobs on medical leave, the total absenteeism recorded by the companies in the Region on any given day amounts to 43,019 workers. The data comes from the report for the fourth quarter of last year prepared by the human resources company Randstad Research, and the Region of Murcia does not come out very well.
The absenteeism rate in the Community stood at 6.6% at the end of last year, seven tenths above the average for the whole of Spain, which was 5.9%, and ranked third in the podium of the communities with the worst records in this aspect, although shared with Asturias.
Randstad highlights in the introduction to his report that “work absenteeism – the absence of the worker from his job when his presence was scheduled – is configured as a serious problem for Spanish companies, with a direct impact on productivity and costs. businesses, also weighing down their competitiveness.
Services are the sector of the regional economy with the highest absenteeism (6.9%), and construction the least (5.4%)
Increase at the end of the year
In all of Spain there are about 1.2 million people who do not go to work every day. Exactly 1,186,875 professionals, of which 25% (297,053) did so despite not being on sick leave, while 75% (889,822) were absent due to temporary disability. For the preparation of this study, the human resources company has used the figures from the Quarterly Survey of Labor Costs of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The data for the last quarter of 2021 reflects a slight increase in absenteeism and a change in the downward trend observed since the beginning of the year. Specifically, and compared to the figures for the previous quarter, total absenteeism in Spain increased by 7.7%, but much more did not have just cause (14.1%) than those who had a medical leave ( 5.8%). The authors of the study attribute this increase to the greater virulence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 at the end of last year.
The study attributes the increase in absences from work at the end of 2021 to the impact of the Ómicron variant
Work absenteeism means that in our country 5.9% of the total agreed hours are lost, a figure that increases by four tenths with respect to the previous quarter. Absenteeism not due to temporary disabilities, that is, unjustified, had a rate of 1.5%.
«The increase in unjustified absenteeism during the last three months of the year is a bad figure, since it can weigh down the economic recovery in which we are immersed as companies do not have the resources to carry it out. For this reason, it is necessary to investigate the causes, in case certain conciliation or motivation measures can alleviate absenteeism, ”said Valentín Bote, director of Randstad Research.
The classification of autonomous communities based on the rate of absenteeism they support has Navarra (7.9%) and the Basque Country (7%) in its first two positions, while Asturias and the Region of Murcia (both with 6, 6%) share the third place,
The regions with the lowest absenteeism were Castilla y León and the Community of Madrid, both with a rate of 5%. On the other hand, unjustified absenteeism from work was higher in Navarra (2.5%), Aragón (1.9%) and the Region (1.8%), while Catalonia (216,882), Andalusia (181,989) and Madrid (158,780) account for almost half (47%) of all professionals who were absent daily during the fourth quarter of 2021.
In all the sectors analysed, the Region of Murcia is once again above the average. Thus, in industry, the total absenteeism rate among Murcian workers rose to 6.4% in the fourth quarter of 2012, three tenths higher than the average.
Real estate activities
Absence from work is lower in the regional construction sector, with 5.2%, compared to 4.5% statewide. In services, on the other hand, the highest absenteeism was recorded, as a regional rate of 6.9%, nine tenths higher than the national average.
In the national economy, the sectors of activity that have registered the lowest rates of absenteeism during the fourth quarter of 2021 were real estate activities, activities of headquarters and business management consulting activities (both with 3.7%), and research and development and legal and accounting activities (both with 3.6%). On the other hand, the highest absenteeism took place in gambling and betting activities (9.9%), health activities (9.4%), postal and courier activities, social services activities without accommodation and assistance in establishments. residential (all with 9.1%).
UGT and CC OO discredit the study and assure that you can miss it not only due to medical leave
The CC OO and UGT unions yesterday downplayed the Randstad study on absenteeism and rejected the argument used by the human resources and temporary work company that all absences are unjustified if they lack medical leave. María Eugenia Pérez, deputy general secretary of the UGT in the Region of Murcia, commented that the report “considers any absence from the job that is not covered by temporary disability, but a permit for marriage, for a move and even for the death of a father or a mother, is perfectly justified and is legally foreseen. Statistics do not allow us to distinguish some cases from others, but it is manipulative to pass everything off as ‘I don’t go because I don’t want to’”, she indicated.
The UGT leader added that “we must not forget that the most frequent casualties are those of short duration and the economic impact is borne by the worker, because the first three days are not charged, unless the agreement improves this circumstance.”
“Interested Report”
CC OO was more critical of Randstad. “These are interested reports, encouraged by the employers, that suggest that workers do not comply with their hours and take advantage of the kindness of the companies,” the union said in a press release. In the opinion of this trade union organization, “data is used in an interested way to give a distorted image of reality, suggesting that absenteeism from work is a serious problem for business competitiveness or that it entails a high cost for society”, when it comes to of “a residual problem that does not have the magnitude that employers try to denounce,” said Víctor Romera, the secretary of Employment of CC OO.
