Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced that the port city is surrounded by Russian troops while food and medical supplies run out. On the other hand, Joe Biden travels to Europe where he will announce new sanctions on Moscow. In other news, Russia confirmed his presence at the year-end G20.
The conflict in Ukraine is in its twenty-eighth day with the suffocating siege on Mariupol as one of the main events. Russian troops prevent humanitarian aid to the city that is experiencing a critical situation.
Meanwhile, officials continue their bids: Joe Biden is headed to Europe where he will issue new punishments to Russia, a nation that has notified its presence at the G20 in Indonesia.
These are the most relevant news of Wednesday, March 23 of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict:
- 07:20 (BOG) Putin will be present at the G20 in Indonesia
The Russian ambassador in Jakarta, Lyudmila Vorobieva, assured that the president’s intention is to attend the summit to be held at the end of the year in the Asian country.
“It will depend on the Covid-19 situation, which is improving so far. Right now the intention is to attend, Putin wants to come to Indonesia,” Vorobieva said.
In addition, he pointed out that “the reaction of Western countries is absolutely disproportionate” and said that it is a “hypocritical” attitude due to the lack of sanctions against Israel for its conflict in Gaza or against the United States in the case of Libya.
- 6:50 (BOG) Biden goes to Europe to push for new sanctions
The president of the United States left this Wednesday for Europe, precisely to Brussels, where he will be part of meetings of NATO, the G7, the European Council and, later, he will go to Poland.
The White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said last Tuesday that on Thursday of this week, Biden and his allies will communicate new sanctions against Russia, although he did not want to specify the nature of the punishments.
“The President will travel to Europe to reinforce the incredible unity we have built with our allies and partners in response to Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine and to consult on next steps,” Sullivan said.
In Brussels, the head of state will take part in an emergency NATO meeting with the leaders of the other 29 countries. He will also have conclaves with the leaders of the G7 and will speak in front of the European Council.
Lastly, in Poland he will see US troops on the defensive front and is scheduled to meet with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda.
- 6:30 (BOG) Mariupol is surrounded with 100,000 civilians in ‘inhuman’ conditions
The port city, one of the scenarios most attacked by Russia since the beginning of the conflict, has not yet capitulated, but the situation is escalating in drama. President Volodímir Zelenski denounced that there are 100,000 citizens locked up without being able to leave the site.
As food and health supplies run out, humanitarian corridors have been intercepted by the Russian military.
The head of state stated that both foreign aid and citizens who were leaving the city were intercepted by the occupants and described this framework as “inhumane conditions.”
The US Department of Defense said Mariupol is now also being attacked by ships from the Sea of Azov.
