After the number of cases in the USA has recently increased again, the US health expert Fauci warns of problematic coronavirus mutations according to Delta.
Washington DC – US immunologist and health expert Anthony Fauci has expressed concern about the development of the coronavirus mutations and has warned of future variants. The 80-year-old said in an interview with the television station on Sunday NBC: “If you allow the virus to circulate freely and don’t try to stop it, then sooner or later there is a chance that you will get another variant (…) that could be even more problematic than Delta.”
Coronavirus: US immunologist Fauci warns of new mutations and speaks out in favor of compulsory vaccination
Fauci was referring to the possibility that another mutation of the coronavirus could develop against which previously known and approved vaccines could no longer offer protection. That is why Fauci, who gained international fame primarily as an advisor to US Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, demanded that everything should be done to get the pandemic under control.
For the health expert, the only way to get the corona pandemic under control is a pronounced and successful vaccination strategy, even if drastic measures have to be taken. Fauci also spoke out in favor of introducing mandatory vaccination at the local level in the USA.
Coronavirus: New Infection Numbers Rise in the USA – Country Pays “Terrible Price”
An attitude with which the 80-year-old is not alone in the USA. The director of the US research agency National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins, introduced mandatory vaccinations for the television station ABC talking on the weekend. The country is now paying the “terrible price” for having so many people unvaccinated, said Collins.
According to the US health authority CDC, a good half of the entire population is now fully vaccinated. Almost 59 percent of all citizens have received at least one vaccine dose. After a rapid pace in the meantime, the vaccination campaign is now making slow progress. US President Joe Biden and high-ranking government officials are increasingly desperate for the population to get vaccinated.
The number of new infections in the USA had recently risen sharply again. After registering almost 10,000 new cases per day at the end of June, the number of new infections a day is now 100,000 on a seven-day average. The number of infections was last at this level in February. An increase that many experts attribute to the spread of the delta variant. (fd / dpa)
